Shane, a new drive,r has over thirty hours of driver training with instructors and zero driving other than that.
We accelerate out of a red light, turn left and accelerate up onto Cambie Bridge. Signal right to change lanes, check the rear mirror for cars behind and start to steer into the new lane.
Oh and add a blind spot/ shoulder check just as we start to steer! OOPS!
THERE IS A CAR RIGHT SMACK TO OUR RIGHT IN THAT BLIND SPOT SHOULDER CHECK AREA!
Shane grips the wheel extra hard and our once straight path forward wiggles a little like a fast mini S movement, as we continue straight aborting the intended lane change.
“Gosh!” Gasps Shane, “That Car was totally right there in my blind area. Thank God I did a blind spot check!”
This is what a good driving habit (blind spot checks before every lateral move) can do to keep you out of trouble even when you don’t fully comprehend the great value of the habit.
Thirty hours to build the habit and the thirtieth hour to FINALLY UNDERSTAND the value of the habit! That is getting theory into practical real-life use!
And to think, some NEVER develop the habit!
hmmmmmmm
