dash speedometer in car showing 150 kmh
Why does my car show 220 km/h. Can it go this fast?

Why do we talk about safety, laws, and dangerous driving yet all climb into cars with speedometers showing a 260-km goal?

Want to catch that light? Go left—it’s faster!

The Bugatti. Just say the name, and watch people light up. This car’s claim to fame? It’s the fastest production car in the world, hitting jaw-dropping speeds. And no, I’m not talking “fast” like your average speedy car. We’re talking over 300 miles per hour—480 kph! Yeah, it’s mind-blowing.

Back in October 2020, I saw a Bugatti take a turn off W Broadway in Vancouver. Meanwhile, I was in a driver training car, maxing out at 180 kph, maybe. It was like a cheetah passing a turtle!

But let’s get real. Speed in the real world isn’t what makes great drivers. So why do we glorify it? Why is the racing world, with its billion-dollar budgets, seen as the gold standard?

Check out these two videos that illustrate the hype versus the reality: the thrill of a Bugatti speeding clip alongside a “boring” safety talk on why cars even go this fast in the first place.

In March 2007, F1 Racing published its annual estimates of spending by Formula One teams.[123] The total spending of all eleven teams in 2006 was estimated at $2.9 billion US. This was broken down as follows: Toyota $418.5 million, Ferrari $406.5 m, McLaren $402 m, Honda $380.5 m, BMW Sauber $355 m, Renault $324 m, Red Bull $252 m, Williams $195.5 m, Midland F1/Spyker-MF1 $120 m, Toro Rosso $75 m, and Super Aguri $57 million.

Is this not the most powerful role model of all time?

480 KPH ——————————-30 KPH

BUGATTI————————————DRIVERS ED

MILLIONS BILLIONS—————————————DON’T ASK

So really, what could I possibly say as a driving instructor to have any significant impact on this huge role model? Really?

Which of the following two videos would you watch?

Time yourself – how long did you watch?
Now time this one. Did you watch it longer than the previous educational clip? Hmmm.

We strongly recommend not training a new driver on your own. We suggest you hire a registered driving instructor with experience in a dual-controlled, fully insured driving school car.
