drivers foot on gas pedal

FULL GAS FULL BRAKES

INSTRUCTORS VIEWPOINT

Many of my clients had experienced several other driving instructors before finding Cooper, maybe because they faced unique challenges that were difficult to resolve.

My car is turbo with a ton of power. Recently I had an excited client who planted the gas pedal full bore down to the floorboards. The noise was loud as the engine screamed to full throttle.

Meanwhile, we were accelerating into a red light intersection that just changed after a yellow, following the original green.

The driver had no vision of the intersection light, having just sped up to change lanes in front of a faster-moving vehicle, and their eyes and brain were still locked onto the rear car as we accelerated to keep away from them.

Interestingly the risk of the rear car was near zero, compared to the actual risk of us screaming forward at full throttle.

The full throttle came after the lane change, as the driver looked up and saw the red light and panicked, planted their foot fully down hard to the floorboards to stop!

Alas, their foot was on the gas! OOPS!

Meanwhile, back in the passenger seat, I was fully down on my brakes slowing us into the stop position for the red light. Additionally, I removed the forward motion and the effect of the full gas, by slipping the transmission into neutral, effectively removing the driver’s full-throttle forward motion.

However, the engine continued to roar full barrel!

I gently leaned close to the driver’s ear and said, “You Are On The Gas Pedal!”

Oops, states the driver as they lift off their foot, and the engine returns to normal.

Welcome to my exciting world of FULL GAS FULL BRAKES!

Real-life professional development is happening right here,

P.S. A very high-anxiety driver with no voice for their struggle.

TOMORROW let us talk about this same incident from the driver’s perspective!

Is The Game Of Driving Similar To Other Games?

Does knowing the rules of a game improve your performance?

Are there opposing teams in this game: ICBC examiners, law enforcement, flow of traffic driving?

Do you know what the real rule book looks like? Have you ever seen it?

Do you know the percentage of failure in this driving game?

And what is failure in this game? A close call? A collision? An injury? A fatality?
