FLOW OF TRAFFIC
From a young age, we spend time in cars with friends, family, or partners, constantly learning even when we’re not paying attention. Most learners can instinctively move with the flow of traffic without focusing on the actual speed. But when you start lessons with Cooper, suddenly you have to stay within posted speed limits—30, 50, etc. This can feel unnatural because it goes against a lifetime of experience. “Wow, 30 feels so slow!”
LIFETIME OF OBSERVATION
This is why I often argue that a few hours with a driving instructor can’t undo the decades of unconscious learning and observation you’ve absorbed from being in cars. These deeply embedded beliefs can only be changed if the learner truly wants to. 🙂
OLD HABITS DIE HARD
Even if the learner wants to change, the process takes time. It requires careful self-awareness of the flow, decades of ingrained beliefs, and the patience to gradually shift and counteract potentially dangerous habits you’ve picked up over the years from well-meaning family and friends.
