THE BACK WHEELS STEER – It’s a common myth, but let’s set the record straight: only the front wheels steer. The back wheels? They just follow, getting dragged around every corner you take.

NEVER SLOW THE CARS DOWN BEHIND YOU – Another myth that gets passed around. But think about it: you’re constantly stopping the cars behind you. Every red light, every stop sign, every left turn—you bring traffic to a complete stop. And that skill of managing the rear traffic to slow down is a big part of driving.

DRY STEERING HURTS THE CAR – Nope, it doesn’t. This old belief needs to be put to rest. Turning your wheel while stationary doesn’t harm your car’s mechanics in any meaningful way. In fact is a very important beginner driver skill, versus the smooth steering expectation.

BE SMOOTH WITH STEERING, GAS, AND BRAKES – People often say this is the most important skill, but it’s not the first thing you need to worry about. Smooth driving is a nice layer to add on top, but only after you’ve mastered the essentials—like keeping your car in the right place at the right time. Focus on being legal and safe first, then worry about being smooth.

BEING PUSHED INTO COMPLEX TRAFFIC SITUATIONS IMMEDIATELY IS GOOD – Some say this is the fastest way to learn, but I’m not buying it. Driving is incredibly complex, involving a unique mix of skills you’ve never used before. Throwing yourself into the deep end too soon can be risky and might even give you a false sense of confidence. Take your time—master the basics before tackling the tough stuff.
