Many drivers believe that a quick “brake check” is a safe way to warn tailgaters or control traffic behind them. However, sudden, intentional braking is dangerous, often causing rear-end collisions or road rage incidents.
A smarter way to manage tailgaters is through gradual deceleration, controlled lane changes, or adjusting following distance. Proactive driving means avoiding unnecessary risks rather than creating them.
Communication is your best defence. Think about what you want to tell the rear driver. There are many ways to encourage the rear car to go around you. Think creatively. It is easier than you think. Also being hit by a tailgater when they are right behind following you is a hit of maybe 1 or 2 or 3 kmh. Right? If you don’t understand this, then it is time to come meet Cooper.
Are you managing tailgaters wisely, or increasing your own risk?
